BREAKING NEWS: New CPT Codes for COVID-19 Vaccine Just Released

As we learned earlier this week, there has been a push for approval from the FDA for emergency use of a COVID vaccine. On the heels of the news, the AMA announced new CPT codes for each of the two COVID vaccines as well as administration codes for each vaccine. Releasing the CPT codes ahead of the virus distribution is very helpful to practices and hospitals, as it can allow them to update their medical records systems in advance.

Please keep in mind that the new vaccines are in a two-dose format. You will notice that the new codes distinguish each vaccine from each other. This helps retain better tracking, reporting, and overall analysis. The new CPT codes for the COVID vaccine are as follows:

COVID-19 CPT Codes

  • 91300 – Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative-free, 30 mcg/0.3mL dosage, diluent reconstituted, for intramuscular use.
  • 91301 – Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative-free, 100 mcg/0.5mL dosage, for intramuscular use.

COVID-19 Vaccine Administration Codes

The coronavirus vaccine administration codes are specific to the coronavirus vaccine and the dosage. Vaccine administration codes report the work of administering the vaccine, counseling the patient or caregiver, and documenting the medical record.

  • 0001A

Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative-free, 30 mcg/0.3mL dosage, diluent reconstituted; first dose

  • 0002A

Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative-free, 30 mcg/0.3mL dosage, diluent reconstituted; second dose

  • 0011A

Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative-free, 100 mcg/0.5mL dosage; first dose

  • 0012A

Immunization administration by intramuscular injection of Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative-free, 100 mcg/0.5mL dosage; second dose

Once the vaccines receive emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration, these codes will be available for utilization. Now is the time to start preparing not only your practices but also your EHR’s for these new changes.
